CESC Limited supplies electricity to Kolkata, Howrah and nearby areas, and bills domestic consumers every month using a telescopic slab tariff approved by the West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission (WBERC). Because every block of units has its own rate, working out a bill by hand is confusing. This CESC bill calculator applies each slab for you and shows exactly where your money goes.

How to use the CESC bill calculator

  1. Choose your connection type. Most households are on the Domestic tariff. Choose Lifeline only if your connection is approved for it.
  2. Enter your units from the bill, or switch to Meter readings and type the previous and current readings — the tool subtracts them for you.
  3. Check the sanctioned load (kVA) printed on your bill. It decides the fixed charge.
  4. Optional: add the MVCA rate and electricity duty shown on your latest bill for a closer match.
  5. Read the slab-wise breakdown, then share or copy the link to compare with family members.

How is the CESC bill calculated?

In a telescopic tariff you do not pay the highest rate on all units. Each slab rate applies only to the units that fall inside that slab. Here is the calculation for a 200-unit month with a 2 kVA load:

  • First 25 units × ₹5.18 = ₹129.50
  • Next 35 units (26–60) × ₹5.69 = ₹199.15
  • Next 40 units (61–100) × ₹6.70 = ₹268.00
  • Next 50 units (101–150) × ₹7.45 = ₹372.50
  • Next 50 units (151–200) × ₹7.62 = ₹381.00
  • Energy charge = ₹1,350.15, plus fixed charge 2 kVA × ₹15 = ₹30.00
  • Bill before MVCA and duty ≈ ₹1,380.15 (about ₹6.90 per unit)

Notice the jump after 300 units: every extra unit costs ₹9.21, about 21% more than the ₹7.62 slab. Keeping summer consumption under 300 units is the single biggest saving for most Kolkata families.

Other charges on your CESC bill

  • Fixed charge: ₹15 per kVA of sanctioned load every month, even if you use very little power.
  • MVCA (Monthly Variable Cost Adjustment): a per-unit adjustment for fuel and power purchase costs, revised periodically.
  • Electricity duty: a government levy collected with the bill, shown as a separate line.
  • Meter rent, arrears and adjustments: depend on your connection and past payments.
  • Rebates: paying before the due date or online may earn a small rebate, which lowers the final amount.

To reconcile this estimate with your real bill, compare the energy charge line first — it should match closely for the same units. Differences usually come from MVCA, duty or a billing period longer than a month.

How to reduce your CESC electricity bill

  • Stay below 300 units in summer. Units above 300 cost ₹9.21 — trimming just 50 units there saves about ₹460 a month.
  • Set the AC at 24–26 °C and use a ceiling fan with it. Each degree higher saves roughly 6% of the AC’s energy.
  • Choose 5-star inverter appliances for the AC and refrigerator — they run most hours of the day in Kolkata’s humid climate.
  • Clean AC filters every 2–3 weeks during peak season; clogged filters make the compressor run longer.
  • Switch off geysers and pumps when not needed — a 2 kW geyser left on for an extra hour a day adds about 60 units a month.
  • Check your sanctioned load. If it is much higher than you need, the fixed charge is higher than necessary.

Frequently asked questions

How is a CESC electricity bill calculated?

CESC uses a telescopic slab tariff approved by WBERC. The first 25 units are charged at the lowest rate, the next 35 units at the next rate, and so on. The energy charges from every slab are added together, then the monthly fixed charge (₹15 per kVA of sanctioned load for domestic homes), MVCA and electricity duty are added to get the final bill.

What is the CESC per unit rate in 2026?

For domestic (urban) consumers the WBERC-approved energy rates are ₹5.18 for 1–25 units, ₹5.69 for 26–60 units, ₹6.70 for 61–100 units, ₹7.45 for 101–150 units, ₹7.62 for 151–300 units and ₹9.21 for every unit above 300. Your average cost per unit rises as consumption rises because more units fall into the higher slabs.

How much is the CESC bill for 200 units?

For 200 units on the domestic tariff with a 2 kVA sanctioned load, the energy charge is ₹1,350.15 and the fixed charge is ₹30.00, so the bill before MVCA and duty is about ₹1,380.15 (an effective ₹6.90 per unit).

What is MVCA on a CESC bill?

MVCA (Monthly Variable Cost Adjustment) is a per-unit adjustment that passes changes in fuel and power purchase cost on to consumers. It changes from time to time, so copy the MVCA rate printed on your latest CESC bill into the optional field of this calculator for a closer estimate.

Who can get the CESC lifeline tariff?

The lifeline domestic rate of ₹4.07 per unit is meant for eligible low-consumption households using up to 25 units a month. If consumption goes above that limit, the normal domestic slabs apply, and this calculator switches automatically.

How many units does an AC use in a Kolkata summer?

A 1.5 ton inverter AC typically uses about 1 to 1.3 units per hour in Kolkata’s humid summer. Running it 8 hours a night adds roughly 240–310 units a month, which often pushes a household past 300 units into the ₹9.21 slab. Use the appliance estimator above to see the effect on your bill.

Why is my actual CESC bill different from this estimate?

Actual bills can include MVCA, electricity duty, meter rent, arrears, adjustments, prompt-payment rebates and security-deposit interest. The number of days in the billing cycle also changes the units consumed. Treat this tool as a close estimate and always pay the amount shown on your official CESC bill.

Is this an official CESC calculator?

No. AC Kharcha is an independent website and is not affiliated with CESC Limited or WBERC. The calculator uses the publicly available tariff schedule to help you understand and plan your electricity bill.
